JAKARTA-Government of Indonesia by PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero)/PLN began building a Hydroelectric Power Plant (hydro) capacity of 50 MW Baliem-2 with an investment of around Rp 4, 9 trillion or equivalent to U.S. $ 516 million, which will be taken from internal funds (budget PLN / APLN).
As quoted from an official statement PLN president director Pamudji Nur that the power plant will utilize the potential of Baliem River, Papua Province.
According to him, the water potential of the Baliem River is great to build hydroelectric power that can be used by communities in the Jayawijaya Mountains and seven other counties. Hydroelectric Baliem 2 targeted commercial operation (commercial operation date / COD) in 2017.
"With these hydropower Baliem-2, the electrification ratio will continue to grow, people can make use of electricity for economic activities, and local governments can be helped in driving the acceleration of regional economic growth," Nur said after signing the plaque marks the start of construction of the power plant in Wamena, Papua, Wednesday (01/08/2012).
Based on the results of Hydro Power potentials Study (HPPS) in 1999, along the Baliem River has the potential to generate electricity up to 880 MW. Baliem-2 hydropower has the potential to develop up to 170 MW, but for the first phase of PLN will build the capacity of 50 MW, consisting of 10 units each with a capacity of 5 MW.
There are also jobs for hydropower Baliem-2 consists of two jobs. The first construction of access roads and major construction (civil work, metal work, electric mechanical work, transmission lines and substations).
"PLN get on with the construction of the access road to the location of the hydroelectric project that already exist along the road about 20 kilometers down the mountain slopes," said Nur.
Second, PLN will also build a 70 kV transmission lines along approximately 35 kilometers that will generate electricity from hydroelectric power to the substation Wamena Baliem, for subsequent distribution to PLN customers in the city of Wamena, Kurulu, and the surrounding area.
According to Nur, PLN has been using fuel as the main source of producing electricity in Wamena to be transported by plane from the city of Jayapura. Baliem-2 hydropower with a capacity of 50 MW was later able to produce as much electricity as 361 GWh per year. (*)
