SOROWAKO, South Sulawesi: PT International Nickel Indonesia Tbk is ready to invest US$2 billion to increase production capacity to 120,000 tons of nickel in the next 5 years.
President and CEO of Vale- shareholder of PT International Nickel Indonesia (INCO)- Murilo Ferreira confirmed that the commitment of a larger investment is to upgrade production capacity of nickel and other production facilities.
There are several reasons related with the expansion plan, such that Indonesia's abundant nickel reserve besides the competitive human resources.
Price is still an attractive factor to consider in making such additional investment.
Murilo said that Inco also plans to diversify its business to other mining products like copper, and coal by utilizing lands that had been existed in the working contract of Inco for future estimation.
"The current working contract is still valid but in the future there is a possibility to expand to copper, bauxite, and coal."
To realize the plan, as he added, the company will consult the expansion plan with other shareholders, including Vale Kanada and Sumitomo.
Regarding the use of the funds, Inco’s President Commissioner Peter Poppinga explained the company plans to add production capacity of 73,000 tons per year to 120,000 tons of nickel per year within the next 5 years. "We are also planning to build a nickel processing plant in Sorowako and nickel ore refinery in Bahodopi, Central Sulawesi."
Inco will also change its name to PT Vale Indonesia as it also plans to increase the power capacity of nickel ore smelter to be 90 megawatts (MW). Currently, mineral mining company has four smelters, which the two smelters have a power capacity of 75 MW and 90 MW respectively.
"That commitment is a guarantee for the business continuity. We want to build strong existence in Indonesia, not only for today, but also for a long-term period," he said.
Regarding with the construction of Karebbe's 90 MW hydro-powered plant, Inco's President Director Nico Kanter saw the newly-inaugurated plant will serve as an essential infrastructure to boost nickel production. Karebbe's Hydro-powered plant spent US$410 million.
The Karebbe power plant completes the range of power plants built by Inco, they are Balambano's hydro-powered plant with 138 MW capacity and Larona's 195 MW hydro-powered plant.(T03/NOM)
