PLN ready to built power plant Kariangau amount Rp 2,5 trillion

BALIKPAPAN: PT PLN (Persero) to build thermal power (plant) 2x100 MW in Kariangau, Balikpapan, with an investment of Rp2,5 trillion in order to overcome the electricity crisis in East Kalimantan.

Construction has begun marked by laying the first stone by the Governor of East Kalimantan (Kaltim) Awang Ishak Faroek with PLN President Director Dahlan Iskan.

As planned, the construction of power plant is targeted to be completed in mid 2013. Investment amounting to Rp 2.5 trillion invested in these plants comes from the public grid and banking loans.

"The 2x100 MW power plant is expected to electrical problems in East Kalimantan can be overcome," said Awang, today.

According to the assumption of PLN, in 2013 the peak load power system in East Kalimantan reached 446 MW with peak load growth of 12.1% on average. Overall, the figure is well above the peak load growth assumptions on average in the network system of East Kalimantan, Central and South that only 10.5%.

Iskan Dahlan said the assumption of electrical energy required throughout Kalimantan until the next 5 years to reach 1,000 MW. "If there is no preparation of the present electricity crisis that has occurred will get worse," he said.

Another benefit to be gained from the construction of this plant that is inviting investors to come and invest in East Kalimantan. This is because the facilities and infrastructure especially the electricity network is quite good.

In addition to solve the power crisis, power plant construction is also parallel with the East Kalimantan provincial government programs in utilizing natural resources in Kalimantan. During these natural resources in Kalimantan, especially coal which brought out many areas so that local people do not feel natural wealth.

Awang expect the existence of this power plant could be an example for the implementation of domestic market obligation (DMO) because the resulting benefits for the wider community so great. (*)
