PLN and Freeport, in Timika will build a hydropower plant

MEDAN-PT PLN (Persero) with PT Freeport Indonesia plans to build hydroelectric (hydropower) with a total capacity of 330 Megawatts (MW,) in Timika, Papua.

According to President Director of PLN, Dahlan Iskan, PLN plans will be submitted in a meeting with the delegation of the United States in the near future.

"It's up to what form such cooperation. But at least Freeport became offtaker (purchaser) of electricity generated from power plants," said President Director of PLN, Dahlan Iskan in Parapat, North Sumatra, Thursday night (13/05/2010).

Currently, more Dahlan, Freeport had been using steam power plant (Power Plant) with a capacity of 4x65 MW.

"Power plant that's not good to the environment and the age they had fired nearly 30 years old so if we can close cooperation Freeport Power Plant that," he said.

If Freeport is willing to close the power plant, said Dahlan, the Freeport can use electricity produced by hydroelectric power, and the remainder can be used to meet the electricity needs of the people of Timika and to build the smelter plant.

"We will be sad smelting company there. What is India, what is China. I have heard that India is looking for locations," he said.

He estimated the investment required to build a hydropower plant of Rp 6 trillion. If Freeport is not interested to invest in the project, then PLN will seek funding from JBIC, or JICA.

Dahlan asserted the existence of this plant is very important for the people of Papua because until now there is still no large-scale power plants being built there. The only plant that built the MHP (Micro Power Plant Hydro Power) with a capacity of 10 MW in Jayapura. In fact, he continued, there is a district that has not terlistriki.

"No electricity, PLN has not only entered the district of Bukit Bintang, so this year we are after 8 MW of MHP was up there," he said.

PLN plans to cancel construction of Timika 2x7 MW power plant included in the 10,000 MW project because no company was interested meminat build. According to him, the plan was already approved by the Vice President Boediono.

"There is an interest but expensive. The capacity of just that much investment of U.S. $ 64 million. Mr. VP agrees there is a replacement home," he added.

He added, PLN plans to build hydroelectric power sourced from the river Urumuka located 125 km from Timika it gradually. Section, the potential power that could be built there until 2000 MW.(*)
